Western Classical Vocals
Voice is obviously the oldest instrument in existence! As the music evolved over the ages, there was a need to entertain an increasingly large audience. Technology like amplification and PA speakers is rather recent if one considers the history of music. Western classical technique of singing developed mostly in Europe with 70% of the Opera music being written in Italian. Singers in the classical era had to project their voice to an auditorium full of audience without the use of mic or amplification, this pushed the boundaries of vocal technique in those days for the singers.
Today that technique is still practised and in use at the Opera houses around the world and in solo classical voice recitals. Some of the techniques involved in mastering this style of music overlaps with contemporary but broadly training in western classical vocals is very different from contemporary vocals. Students pursuing western classical vocals may expect to learn music from Operas, Italian arias, Broadway musicals and similar selections.
