Bollywood Music

Living in India, no one is an alien to Bollywood music! It is a part of Indian culture and heritage today. The current soundscape of bollywood music is completely different compared to just 2 decades back. The reason for this is the strong influence of western music on bollywood composers. Sounds of Dholak and Tabla are today replaced by drumkit and world percussion; artists like Sivamani, Zakir Hussain and Taufiq Qureshi deserve a special mention here. The vocal melodies are no longer purely based on hindustani classical or carnatic ragas, in fact the vocal techniques used today are heavily based in the western vocal techniques.

At Bridge Music Academy, we merge the knowledge and highly refined teaching pedagogy of western music to analyse and break down bollywood music for our students so they are able to learn, perform and even create bollywood music effectively. Knowledge of harmony, world rhythms, ear-training, improvisation based on Indian and western scales/modes are some of the common aspects of music that one needs to master to excel in bollywood music today. Interestingly these are the aspects that any purist hindustani musicians will not be equipped to teach today!

Having said that we are best equipped to teach you in various areas of western music that overlap with bollywood music, learning hindustani and/or carnatic music could be an excellent addition to preparing for a successful career in bollywood industry. We do not specialise in these forms yet but may soon include it into our offerings soon.

As assessments closest to bollywood music available at Bridge Music Academy are the Rockschool exams. The students may choose to even perform bollywood music as part of their exam repertoire if they wish. Some of the students have produced and released their music, which is inspired by bollywood music, on popular platforms. Follow our alumni page to read these success stories.
